Peterson’s brand of pipe is one of the old famous worldwide for pipe tobacco, they already well known since 19th century.
Start the business in Ireland, and now the business lead by Tom Palmer from Peterson head office at the Sallynoggin factory, Dublin, Ireland.
Peterson’s started business when the Kaap brothers, George and Fredrick immigrated from Nuremburg, Bavaria to United Kingdom, in 1866 they listed as Meerschaum pipe makers, and in 1869 they open their own shop in London.
In 1876 that is a young immigrant from Latvia, Charles Peterson came to England, and hired by Fredrick as pipe craftsman, primarily to make a custom order of briar wood pipes.
After Fredrick pass away in 1881, followed by his wife a years later, the business inherited by their 10 and 12 years old sons (Alfred and Christian), the company renamed Kapp Brothers.
Since then, with an appointed from the executors, Charles Peterson to lead the company until the two boys came of age to manage the business. After the sons come of age, Alfred and Charles Peterson bough out Christian’s shareholding and renamed the business as Kapp & Peterson, Christian move from Ireland to England and become a Doctor.
In August 1890, Charles Peterson applied a patent for an improved tobacco pipe. Awarded the patent Number 12393 on June 1891 for Great Britain and Ireland. January 1891 they got a French patent No. 210944, and USA patent No. 519,135 on May 1894.
Due to their improvement on the quality of product and their innovative, they got additional patents, including the famous P-lip patent in 1898.
In 1895, Kapp and Peterson moved to Dublin and also opened a new depot in London. In 1914, Harry (Fredrick Henry Kapp), son of Alfred, joined the business. The business running smoothly even after the Republic era of Ireland as an Irish Republic.
Year 1969/1970 the ‘Made in England’ stamp was discontinued following the closing of London based factory. (Peterson’s maintained a pipe factory in London since 1899). English made of Peterson pipe actually spanned the period between the pre-Republic and Republic era of the Ireland.
1987 Peterson make a debut with a bestselling issue of Sherlock Holmes pipe. Following with the second issue ‘The Return of’ and based on the success of ‘the Original’ issue, with seven additional new shapes. All issues have an XL bowl sizes and similar sterling silver bands with the SH Stamp.
In 2015 there is a celebration of 150th year of Peterson brand. That is also a launching of detailed Peterson reference book, and new commemorative pipe issue. The company also launched a miniature of Sherlock Holmes pipe issue called as ‘junior’ Sherlock series.
For reference, we propose the fancy Peterson pipe that the shape a little bit nearly same with a Sherlock Holmes pipe. 05 KILLARNEY PIPE – in this case the ‘Red Pipe’.
The 05, full bent shape features a slight, almost calabash lip on the rim of the bowl. This model doesn’t use the 9mm filter as in some other Killarney pipes.
The Peterson Killarney range features a deep and vibrant red stain, with glossy waxed finish. This large selection features the classic Peterson shapes and from the more modern “B” series.
Given a triple band with a vulcanite stem and either the P-Lip or Fishtail bit. The Killarney range has something for everyone, solid and reliable pipes.
